Ember Seminars

Igniting Ideas Through Critical Dialogue

The name "Ember" carries personal significance for the series founder, Zhijun, who translated the ending theme "Ember" from the anime Vinland Saga under the Netease Music username Lanx Australis. The song's central metaphor—"The flame within will burn forever"—captures the essence of what these seminars aim to achieve.

Like an ember that holds the potential to ignite larger fires, meaningful dialogue often begins with small sparks of insight that, when carefully tended, can illuminate complex problems and inspire lasting change. The seminars embrace this patient, persistent approach to intellectual engagement—recognizing that transformative ideas rarely emerge from single conversations but rather from sustained, thoughtful exchange over time.

Ember Seminars is an intimate discussion series that brings together emerging scholars, practitioners, and thought leaders to examine pressing questions at the intersection of development, policy, and social change. Each seminar features 3-5 participants engaged in structured dialogue around carefully selected readings, case studies, or contemporary challenges. Rather than traditional presentations, Ember Seminars emphasize collaborative inquiry—participants come prepared to question assumptions, explore contradictions, and build understanding through rigorous exchange.

Ember seminars: Diplomatic Perspectives

September 2, 2025

Matthew, our Kokrobite Program President, organized a special Ember Seminar with His Excellency Ambassador Designate Mpho Churchill O. Mophuting, Ambassador of the Republic of Botswana to the United States.

The session examined development challenges through diplomatic practice, focusing on small state partnership dynamics, youth engagement in governance, regional integration within SADC, and cultural diplomacy.

Following Ember Seminars' structured dialogue format, participants engaged directly with Ambassador Mophuting's insights on navigating domestic development priorities within international partnership frameworks.

Ember Seminars: FROM Model to Implementation

Aug 15, 2025

Our award-winning UN climate transition model is being adapted by UNICEF as a regional working framework. This seminar examines the challenges and opportunities of scaling innovative approaches within established institutional structures.

Key Questions: How do pilot projects transition to operational programs? What gets preserved and what gets lost when innovative models are institutionalized? How do we measure success when context changes significantly?

The UNICEF Adaptation: The regional implementation raises questions about cross-cultural applicability, resource requirements, and institutional capacity. Early indicators suggest both promising uptake and predictable implementation challenges. The discussion will explore lessons from the adaptation process and broader questions about knowledge transfer in development practice.
